The Judges sent to check out Walter's report found out the hard way Dredd was indeed still alive. Having left a suitably large trail of carnage behind them Dredd and Fergee returned to the underworld with Dredd having to trust Walter to succeed.
Chief Judge Cal was more than a little unhappy to learn Dredd was still alive. So it wasn't the ideal moment for Walter to be introduced to him.
Things definitely looked bleak for Walter. But they were about to take a surprising twist.
